Region Ten: BIPOC experience disproportionate barriers to mental health care – The Daily Progress

July is recognized as Black, Indigenous and People of Color Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is a time to focus on the mental health needs of the BIPOC community.
RELATIONS STAFF
Research shows that members of this group often face significant disparities in terms of mental health needs and also access to resources. In the United States, 41% of Hispanic and Latino adults report mental health concerns, but only 21% receive mental health care. BIPOC individuals also are 20% more likely to experience depression compared to Caucasians. This is especially pronounced for African American adults, who are twice as likely to experience psychological distress, but less likely to access treatment. Native Americans and Alaska Natives also experience depression at nearly twice the rate of the general U.S. population.
Mental health stigma is one of the biggest barriers for seeking treatment, and it is very common when it comes to behavioral health. Other systemic barriers include:

Having BIPOC providers in mental health settings is crucial in order to provide marginalized communities with opportunities to connect through shared experiences and amplify stories of hope and resilience.
This column, which promotes community health, is sponsored by Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, Region Ten Community Services Board, Blue Ridge Health District and the University of Virginia Health System.
In terms of treatment options, peer-led groups, especially those led by BIPOC providers, increase engagement and the likelihood that someone will stay in services. The term “peer” is defined as someone who has lived experience in mental health or substance use concerns. At Region Ten, there is a strong legacy of hiring people who have previously been served by the agency into peer support roles, which has yielded higher levels of engagement in services.
Region Ten also has a number of mental health peer support groups that are free to the community at our Blue Ridge Center. These free groups operate during weekday business hours and are low barrier, meaning a person does not have to be connected to Region Ten services to engage in any of the programming. Any member of the community can attend one of the Blue Ridge Center peer groups. For a list of those groups, visit regionten.org/events/category/blue-ridge-center.
Region Ten has a number of free monthly courses, such as Mental Health First Aid and Community Resilience Initiative courses, that can provide valuable information on how to decrease stigma and increase resilience. More information may be found at: regionten.org/events.
Other local resources include:
Charlottesville-based Region Ten is part of a statewide network of 40 community service boards working to provide mental health, developmental disability and substance use services in local communities. It has more than 35 different programs to aid and support all ages.
, including outpatient, intensive outpatient, day support and residential programs with 24/7 crisis support.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

In a country like Nigeria, where over 60 percent of the population is under the age of 25, the importance of education in shaping our collective future cannot be overstated. Yet, within this vital sector lies a consistently under-prioritized foundation — Early Childhood Education (ECE).
The first years of a child’s life represent a window of opportunity. According to UNESCO, over 90 percent of a child’s brain develops before the age of five. These early years are not only crucial for cognitive development, but also for emotional growth, social behavior, and long-term health. For nations that understand this — and act on it — the returns are immeasurable. For those that don’t, the cost is equally steep.
As Commissioner for Education in Edo State, I have seen firsthand how foundational learning — or the absence of it — impacts everything that comes after. When children miss out on early structured learning, they begin their academic journey already at a disadvantage. This often leads to poor performance in later years, high dropout rates, and limited life opportunities.
According to the World Bank, 70 percent of children in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria cannot read and understand a simple sentence by age 10 — a phenomenon they call “learning poverty.” These gaps don’t begin in primary school; they start much earlier, when the early years are neglected.
We often talk about building schools and universities, but if the early learning foundation is weak, the entire structure is compromised. As I’ve said before, “If you don’t have a solid foundation, you can’t build a house. You can’t teach a child when he is sitting under a leaking roof or running out of the classroom when it rains.”

The importance of early childhood education also extends far beyond the classroom. It is a matter of equity. Children born into poverty or living in rural areas often begin life with a disadvantage. Without access to structured, affordable early learning, these children fall further behind before they’ve even had a chance to start. Quality ECE can bridge this gap and promote long-term social mobility.
In countries like Finland and Singapore, the government has long recognized the power of early childhood education. Their models — free preschool access, play-based learning, professional teacher training, and strict quality control — have proven that national excellence begins early. Even Rwanda, with far fewer resources, has successfully built community-driven early learning centres in rural areas, showing that local innovation can drive lasting change.
There’s also a powerful economic argument. Nobel Laureate economist James Heckman found that every dollar invested in early childhood education yields a return of seven to thirteen dollars in long-term benefits — including increased productivity, reduced crime, and lower public health costs. In practical terms, early education is one of the smartest investments any society can make.

It is also one of the strongest tools for peace and national security. Uneducated youth are far more vulnerable to poverty, crime, radicalization, and violence. UNICEF has repeatedly pointed out the link between education and social stability. If Nigeria truly seeks to address insecurity in the long term, the answer must begin in the earliest classrooms.
Despite its importance, early childhood education in Nigeria remains underdeveloped. Less than 40 percent of children aged 3 to 5 have access to pre-primary education. In rural areas, this number is even lower. Most public schools have no dedicated space for early learning, and the private options are often unaffordable for working-class families.

In Edo State, we are working to change this. We are integrating early childhood education into our public schools, prioritizing foundational literacy and numeracy, and expanding teacher training to meet the unique needs of young learners. We’re also renovating classrooms across the state, ensuring they are safe and stimulating environments. And through innovative programs like EdoSET, we’re laying the groundwork for digital-first learning from the earliest years.
Our goal is to reverse the trend of neglect — to move from reactive policies to proactive investment. As I’ve said many times: “We must make the public schools so good that private schools become unattractive to Edo people.” That begins with the earliest years.
The future of Nigeria will not be decided in the boardrooms of Lagos or the chambers of Abuja. It will be shaped in the classrooms of Benin, Kano, Enugu, Maiduguri, and every community in between — especially in those first few years when a child’s mind is open to everything.
If we are serious about building a peaceful, prosperous, and equitable Nigeria, we must stop treating early childhood education as optional. It is not. It is where the nation begins.
Let us build the future — by building the child first.
Dr. Emmanuel Idiagbon Paddy Iyamu is the Commissioner for Education, Edo State

Geography Olympiad Sparks Renewed Hope In Nigerian Education – News Agency of Nigeria

Geography Olympiad Sparks Renewed Hope In Nigerian Education – News Agency of Nigeria

Africa's Media Giant
Africa's Media Giant
By Ibukun Emiola
After years of educational decline and systemic challenges, a quiet revolution is stirring across Nigeria’s schools — led not by conventional subjects, but by Geography.
At the heart of this revival is the Geography Olympiad, an annual international competition for secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19.
The students are tested on theoretical knowledge, multimedia tasks, and intensive fieldwork, involving cartography and spatial analysis.
Though often considered an overlooked subject in Nigerian schools, Geography is now gaining prominence as schools, educators, and institutions rally to prepare students for global competition.
Since Nigeria’s debut at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in Cologne, Germany, in 2012, the country has participated in several editions hosted by Japan, Poland, Russia, China, Canada, and Turkey.
In June 2025, Nigeria’s national representatives, known as the “Golden Team,” returned from the Open International Geography Olympiad in Moscow, Russia, with a bronze medal.
This development has since sparked enthusiasm among teachers and students nationwide.
The Lead of the Olympiad Task Force, Mr Ishaq Ahmed, described the achievement as a milestone.
“I believe that every teacher should prepare students to compete on the world stage,” Ahmed said.
Across the country, schools are intensifying efforts to train candidates through regional qualifiers, culminating in national selection and international participation.
One of such schools, Zamani College, Kaduna, has become a leading force in the Olympiad programme, consistently producing top-performing students.
The school’s Principal, Mrs Josephine Mohammed, said Geography has become a tool to empower students and transform future outcomes.
“What we are building here is more than a competition; it is the foundation of Nigeria’s future,” she said.
Supporting this grassroots momentum is the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG), which comprises over 2,500 academic members.
This is also supported by GIS Konsult Ltd., a geospatial consulting firm, dedicated to promoting the teaching and application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote-sensing technology in secondary schools.
A former president of ANG, Prof. Olukayode Oyesiku, observes that the discipline is rapidly evolving into a unique gateway for tackling real-world challenges.
He identified the challenges as climate change, urban development, and natural resource management.
“Geography equips students with the critical skills they need to address global challenges.
“We are training a new generation to analyse spatial data, interpret environmental trends, and propose sustainable solutions,” he said.
The Olympiad programme, implemented under the Geography Green School Initiative, is nationally coordinated by Mr David Afolayan.
According to him, the programme’s long-term goal is to promote Geography as a subject of first choice for students, while preparing them for leadership and global engagement.
“Our goal is to establish Geography as a subject of choice that inspires students and grooms them for leadership in an ever-changing world,” Afolayan said.
His team has led efforts to expand school registrations, organise training camps, and attract sponsorships, resulting in increasing national participation each year.
Education experts believe the recent success in Moscow proves that with the right support, Nigerian students can thrive on the global stage.
As the nation prepares for the next iGeo, stakeholders say the message is clear — investment in Geography education is an investment in a generation capable of understanding the world.
This generation, they say, would navigate its complexities and build a better future.
Geography is no longer just a subject. It is now a mission, a movement, and a roadmap to Nigeria’s educational renaissance. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Noble Desktop offers an immersive digital marketing training program for students looking towards a career change or a future in online advertising. This course covers all of the essential skills that a professional marketer will need to know, including how to plan, execute, and maintain an online marketing campaign. Students will get hands-on experience using tools like Semrush, Google Ads and Analytics, and other online data collection tools to help them gain a better understanding of their audience, and they’ll learn how to use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to expand their reach. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion, and because this is a career-focused program, everyone will have the chance to get one-on-one job mentorship training. An additional free retake option is available for those who want to review the material a second time.
When accounting for overall web traffic and unique user base, social media platforms make up five of the top ten most visited websites in the world (with newcomers like TikTok and WhatsApp steadily gaining in popularity, with both making the top 20). As such, many people treat the internet primarily as the tool they use to access social media platforms, meaning that there are a lot of eyes on these sites that would be hard to reach otherwise. In Noble Desktop’s immersive social media marketing program, students will learn how to use the unique features of Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X (Twitter), YouTube, and LinkedIn and how to tailor your social media marketing campaigns for those platforms. Students will learn practical skills, receive career-focused training and mentorship, and work on real world projects that they can add to their professional portfolio.
Students interested in learning the ins and outs of digital marketing can enroll in this online training program and get hands-on experience using practical examples of digital marketing campaigns as their guide. Students will receive live instruction on everything from paid advertising with Google to writing ad copy and email marketing campaigns. Students will build a portfolio of sample projects that they can add to their job materials and they will receive access to General Assembly’s career-support services, including their network of over 90,000 GA graduates worldwide.
Students looking for professional digital marketing instruction may want to consider the Digital Marketing program at the NYU School of Professional Studies (a part of their school of continuing education). This program aims to provide students with practical and theoretical knowledge pertaining to running an online marketing campaign, including how to design promotions and content, run your plan successfully, and gather user data to determine whether or not your marketing campaign is successful. This course also aims to help students learn how to put digital marketing plans at the core of their advertising strategies.
In this continuing education program, you’ll learn how to leverage the wide variety of digital tools available to marketers and advertisers. Students will learn how to create engaging content for online campaigns with a focus on ensuring solid SEO. This course is available entirely online and is taught by professional instructors with years of experience in digital marketing. Students will learn how digital marketing campaigns can be a pillar of their advertising strategies and they will learn how to utilize social media platforms as part of these campaigns. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to analyze the success of a digital marketing project and they will have the tools needed to start improving their own online advertising campaigns.
In this four-day program, you will learn the art of crafting effective, long-term digital marketing strategies. If, three years ago, you were to have taken a digital marketing course, it would not have mentioned TikTok in any meaningful way, and you’d get blank stares asking how to incorporate LLMs and ChatGPT into your digital marketing strategies. Likewise, what a digital marketing course will look like three years from now is impossible to gauge. Thus, this course aims to provide students with the practical knowledge and theories they need to continue designing and implementing digital marketing strategies regardless of what changes in technology and consumer interest arrive. This course is ideal for experienced marketers looking to build long-term growth skills rather than students looking for practical training in running contemporary digital marketing projects.
One of the major changes that has made digital marketing simultaneously significantly easier and significantly more involved is the ease with which even the smallest organizations can collect and analyze data. One of the most common ways for small businesses to do this is through Google Analytics, a powerful tracking application offered by Alphabet that will let you determine how many customers are finding your web pages and what is driving them there. In this course, students will learn how to utilize the Google Analytics interface, how to gather useful or practical data from the platform and how to read and interpret that data in order to make more informed business decisions.
Search Engine Optimization is the name of the game in digital marketing, especially for businesses looking to get their services noticed. Google is, by a wide margin, the most visited webpage on earth and it is the first place most people turn to when looking for information. Given this, building a web presence that ranks highly on Google is vital to the long-term health of any business or organization. Since the Google algorithm is constantly changing (for better or for worse), SEO training will focus on how to create dynamic, engaging content that still ranks highly even as the specific requirements change and how to update and reutilize content in order to stay relevant. Students enrolled in this course will leave the class ready to start producing ad copy and webpage content that helps them rank higher and more consistently.
Another way to help get your company into the public eye is through paid Google search advertisements. This process involves bidding on the right to have your content featured as part of the sponsored results section when a prospective customer searches a given term. This will help get your content to the top of any given page and will help you stake a claim to the niche search results that you need to hold onto. Students enrolled in this course will learn how to work with the Google Ads platform, how to be strategic in their use of the service and how to maximize their returns on a limited Google Ad budget.
While it sometimes gets a bad rap because of poor practices, spammers and scammers, email marketing is an important tool for keeping your customers engaged with your services and up-to-date on the goings on inside your business. In this course, you’ll learn effective strategies for utilizing email marketing, including how to avoid turning customers off with your emails, how to write email marketing campaigns that communicate clearly and effectively with your audience, and how to leverage email marketing campaigns for additional sales. This course is a good introduction to the world of digital marketing and the skills that students learn in this class are transferable to other digital marketing courses.
This course is for digital marketing novices who are looking to brush up on the theories and fundamentals of running digital marketing campaigns. In this course, students will learn about how to strategize and plan out a digital marketing campaign, how to create content that is optimized for consumer engagement and how to identify your target audience. Time will also be spent learning how to analyze markets and develop assessments of where it is best to advertise your product or service. By the end of the class, students will have a complete understanding of the basics of digital marketing and be ready to go on to more specialized training in a bootcamp or certificate program.
While there is a lot of work to be done on the behind-the-scenes aspects of digital marketing, none of it will matter if you are presenting your customers with content that speaks to them and makes them want to engage with your business. In the content marketing bootcamp, you’ll learn how to write ad copy, measure the results of that ad copy, and strategize promotion plans and campaigns that will draw traffic to your webpage. You will also learn strategies for curating and organizing content and best practices for updating content and promotions to suit the needs of your particular project.
Another option for students looking to learn the basics of digital marketing, this 101 course is an ideal place to get training in the fundamentals of planning and running a digital marketing campaign. This course offers students the chance to learn practical and applicable approaches to digital marketing that they can immediately start using in their professional lives. This course covers everything from the basics of content creation to managing social media accounts and creating SEO-friendly webpages. By the end of this course, students will have the basic tools they need to start working on more complex digital marketing projects for their employers or companies.
Thanks to the rise of “Instagram Influencer” as a legitimate career path for online advertisers, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms for building organic support among a community of engaged users. In this course, you’ll learn how to utilize Instagram’s various features to run successful paid and unpaid marketing campaigns. You’ll get hands-on experience creating engaging content, mastering Stories, leveraging hashtags, developing a community, creating a post cadence, and undertaking collaborations. By the end of this course, you’ll be ready to start using Instagram to build a community around your product and engage directly with your audience on the platform.
The flagship platform of Meta, Facebook is the third most commonly accessed website on the internet and it has more unique, signed-in users than any other website. It also has an incredibly robust collection of advertising and community building tools for businesses and individuals interested in utilizing the platform. In addition to Facebook Groups and the Facebook Marketplace, advertisers can purchase ad space on the platform, create targeted advertisements to reach specific audiences and keep customers up to date on the latest goings on. The website is so robust for advertisers that many small businesses utilize a Facebook page in lieu of a traditional website.
While it probably isn’t the first social media platform that you think of, LinkedIn is an important platform for keeping engaged with other professionals in a given field. LinkedIn helps you stay in contact with potential business partners, employees, or collaborators and it is a good way to ensure that other members of the industry are aware of your presence and engaged with your product. LinkedIn training focuses less on how to sell your product to customers and more on how to sell your product to other professionals who may want to invest, collaborate, or even apply to work at your firm. This course provides students with an understanding of how to optimize profiles, utilize networking tools, and leverage LinkedIn’s paid advertising features to their advantage.
YouTube is the most frequently visited non-search engine site on the internet and YouTube users often spend hours engaged with content. YouTube’s monetization system prioritizes viewers engagement with advertisers, making this an ideal platform to advertise on, whether you are creating your own content or not. In this course, you’ll learn about YouTube’s paid advertising features (to get your advertisements placed in front of and during videos that are relevant to your customers’ interests), creating your own YouTube content and collaborating with other creators for sponsored video content. This course will provide you with the insider knowledge you need to make informed decisions about the exact way that your business stands to gain the most by utilizing YouTube as an advertising platform.
As the social media platform most associated with the younger generations, learning how to navigate TikTok is important if you want to reach out to consumers in the vital 18-25 demographic. You’ll learn how to create short videos that encourage users to engage with your product and you’ll learn how to cultivate an audience for your product. In addition, you’ll learn how to create organic advertising opportunities on the platform while working on collaborations with other TikTokers. In this course, you’ll get hands-on experience creating content and learning how to take advantage of TikTok trends and rising popular videos to gain a footing on the platform and get your product or service in front of users who are part of your target audience.
While social media platforms are pivoting largely to video at the moment, content marketing through platforms like professional blogs and Twitter. In this course, you’ll learn how to write compelling and effective ad copy for your blogs, how to use blogs as a tool for improving SEO and user engagement and how different styles of blogs can benefit different kinds of businesses. You’ll also learn how to run a brand focused Twitter account and how to utilize a personal Twitter account to drive business to your professional account. This course is a great way to get accustomed to social media advertising in a way that ensures that you learn useful, transferable skills that can be applied to other digital marketing endeavors.
Live streaming has become a popular method of creating audience engagement and bringing eyes to a given product, even if the streaming content is unrelated to the product or service in question. You’ll learn how to build a streaming set-up (which is more accessible than ever but audience expectations are higher) and how to use tools like OBS to make streaming easier and more engaging. This course aims to provide students with the practical skills they need to create engaging live online content and to leverage that content as an advertising tool for either the content itself or some other product or service being offered.
This capstone social media marketing course is intended for students with a background education in online marketing who are looking to get themselves prepared for the job market. In this class, students will learn how to refine their application material, including getting hands-on experience creating an actual portfolio of sample advertisements and projects and they will learn how to navigate the process of applying for jobs in digital marketing. This course requires students to have materials and training, but it is an important final step for anyone looking to become a successful professional in the field of social media and digital marketing.
High School students looking to learn how to leverage social media and other online platforms as a marketing tool (for their own start-ups or as a possible career path) may want to enroll in a summer program aimed at teaching them the art of social media marketing. Students in the NextGen Summer Social Media Marketing Bootcamp will learn how to use all of the major social media platforms as spaces to advertise their products or content and how to cultivate an audience that they can engage with through these platforms. Students will learn how to use Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms, taking what they already know about navigating social media and putting it to practical use as a tool for advertising.
In this course, an expert instructor will teach your employees how to create content that has high SEO and ensures that your websites rank highly on search engines like Google. In this course, they will learn to consider SEO at every step of the process and they will get formal training in everything from writing content that is in line with Google’s algorithm to using images and other media to boost relevance. This course is an ideal entry point to SEO-focused content creation that will benefit virtually any team of online content producers.
If you want your team to have success at digital marketing projects, they will need the training to collect data and reports on how their projects are going. In this course, students will learn how to use Google Analytics to track views, impressions, sales and a host of other metrics that are useful for all aspects of a digital marketing campaign. This can be useful for virtually anyone working on your team, since being able to track and record important data is essential to making informed decisions about every step of the process, whether it is content creation, choosing what kinds of content to prioritize or identifying what is and isn’t working in a given ad campaign.
Similarly, knowing how to utilize paid Google Ad services are vital for making targeted advertising decisions that can help grow your business, get your products in front of your target audience, or just stay engaged with prospective clients. Learning how to use Google Ads can help your marketing team leverage paid and unpaid advertising to target specific audiences, remain relevant with key search terms, and drive traffic to specific parts of your website that are particularly relevant to your current business needs.
Finally, you may want to consider enrolling your team members in a social media marketing program to help them understand how they can leverage everything from Facebook and Twitter to Reddit and TikTok as part of an overall marketing campaign. These lessons will cover practical skills that marketers need in order to run social media campaigns, engage with audiences and build followings on various platforms. It will also include hands-on training in the process of working on different platforms, since each site has a different set of tools and audience expectations that will shape how they are used for advertising.
Learning digital marketing is a very versatile professional skill that can benefit you whether you choose to pursue it as a career or as a tool to help build your personal business or brand. The field of digital marketing is a big business, with Digital Marketers in NYC making an average of between $80,000 and $90,000 annually. In addition, given that New York is one of the advertising capitals of the world, you can also find work at an advertising firm as a specialist in digital marketing, rather than finding work at a specific company.
If you are looking to grow your own business or build a new brand identity (whether you are head of a new start-up, fulfilling a lifelong dream of opening a small business, or just wanting to get your personal Etsy store off the ground), learning digital marketing skills can help take the guesswork out of getting your feet firmly planted. Learning how to be confident in your marketing projects and utilize the wide range of tools and platforms available to you can help you make better decisions about your marketing strategies and help your project become more successful in the long term. You don’t need to pursue a career in digital marketing for these skills to pay off.
When choosing a digital marketing class, you’ll want to review your options and ensure that you are picking the class that suits your needs, since there are so many different courses available. The most important question will be whether you intend to pursue digital marketing as a career or whether you are pursuing it to help support another project. If you are looking to pursue a career in digital marketing, it is probably best to enroll in an immersive digital marketing program, like Noble’s Digital Marketing Certificate program, since these programs will help you build a career portfolio and understand every aspect of the digital marketing process (and they often come with career support). If you are looking to get an unrelated project off the ground, it would be in your best interest to be more selective in the skills you learn and enrolling shorter, targeted courses (if you are looking to advertise an Etsy store, learning how to use TikTok and Instagram will be more useful than learning how to use Google Ads).
You’ll also want to consider the modality of the course that best suits your needs. Enrolling in a part-time or asynchronous course can be beneficial for students looking to learn new career skills while still maintaining their day jobs or for start-up employees looking to learn skills in their spare time. Students who need a lot of training in a condensed period of time are more likely to benefit from immersive, full-time programs.
